What does Mobile Office allow
me to do?
With Mobile Office, you can:
- Establish quick connections
to the Internet. With the Quick 2 NetSM feature,
you can get connected to the internet typically in less than
10 seconds.
- Dial into corporate networks
or other services (e-mail, Internet, etc. just as you would
using a regular phone line.)
- Send and receive faxes.
What
does the Mobile Office configuration software do?
Installs Fourelle's VenturiTM compression software,
which can double the performance of the Quick 2 NetSM
feature for internet browsing, e-mail downloads, and file
transfers.
How
do I obtain fast access to the Internet?
Mobile Office subscribers can use the Quick 2 NetSM
feature to quickly access the Internet, typically in less than
10 seconds.
All of your wireless
connections are available through the Verizon Mobile Office
Application. Just "double-click" the Verizon Mobile
Office shortcut on your desktop.
You do not need to maintain a
separate account with an Internet service provider (ISP), since
access to the Internet is part of the Mobile Office service
offer. And, there are no incremental access or feature fees for
this service.
How
fast can I send and receive digital data using the Mobile Office
service?
The connection speed for Mobile Office service and faxing is
typically 14,400 bits per second (bps).
What
are the advantages of the Verizon Wireless digital Mobile Office
service over conventional analog data service?
- Faster connection speeds:
14,400 bps for digital data as compared to 4800 to 9600 bps
for analog.
- Increased reliability:
Digital service offers more reliability and throughput than
analog data service.
- Increased battery life:
Digital phones require less power than analog phones, thus
extending the battery life.
- Fast access to the Internet:
Through our Quick 2 NetSM feature, Verizon
Wireless enables fast access to the Internet, typically in
less than 10 seconds.
- No monthly service fee:
Verizon Wireless does not charge a monthly fee for the
Mobile Office service. The service is billed at the same low
"per minute" rates as your Verizon Wireless voice
service today. Check with your local Verizon Wireless
representative for special promotions and pricing options
for your area.
Do
I need a separate Internet service provider (ISP)? Why would I
want to sign up with one?
You don't need a separate ISP for wireless access to the
Internet through your Mobile Office service. However, if you
want to access the Internet using a modem and a regular phone
line, you will need a separate account with an ISP to do this.
Verizon Wireless does not
charge a monthly fee for the Mobile Office service. The service
is billed at the same low "per minute" rates as your
Verizon Wireless voice service today. Check with your local
Verizon Wireless representative for special promotions and
pricing options for your area.
Does
Verizon Wireless provide an e-mail account as part of the Mobile
Office service?
Mobile Office does not include an e-mail account for you at this
time. However, if you do not have an e-mail account, you can
sign up for free e-mail at many places on the Internet, such as;
www.yahoo.com, www.altavista.com
or www.msn.com.
Additionally, if you already
have an existing e-mail account with an ISP, you will have
wireless access to that account through Mobile Office.
How
much does it cost to use the Verizon Wireless data service?
Verizon Wireless does not charge a monthly fee for the Mobile
Office service. The service is billed at the same low "per
minute" rates as your Verizon Wireless voice service today.
Check with your local Verizon Wireless representative for
special promotions and pricing options for your area.
Where
do I go for Wireless data support?
- If you are using the Mobile
Office configuration software, please review the Help file
found on the CD.
- If you are not using the
Mobile Office configuration software, please see the user
guides for basic set-up instructions and additional
information for using the Mobile Office service.
- If you are still having
problems contact your Verizon Wireless office or dial *611
from your cellular phone and select the prompt
"Internet Solutions" for assistance.
- Try your phone manufacturer
(see your owner's manual for numbers).
- If you are using a Windows
device, try the Microsoft support site at http://support.microsoft.com
- Call your computer
manufacturer (see your computer manual for numbers).
- Call your communication
software company (see your software manual for numbers).
Where will my Mobile Office
service work?
The Mobile Office service is available in all Verizon Wireless
digital markets and the list keeps growing. For availability in
specific areas, check with your Verizon Wireless representative.
What
if I need to use wireless data services outside of the current
Mobile Office digital data service area?
One recommendation is to consider Qualcomm's QCP-860 phone with
the Qualcomm "Data On the Go" PC-card modem. In
addition to supporting digital data service through Mobile
Office, this solution supports data connectivity where Mobile
Office is unavailable, by forcing the phone into its analog
mode. A roaming fee may apply and connection times to the
Internet may vary.
What kind of equipment do I need
to send and receive digital data?
- A compatible digital data
capable phone
- A compatible serial data
cable to connect your computer with your phone. If you are
having difficulty locating a serial data cable to purchase
for your data-capable digital phone, visit www.thesupplynet.com
or dial *611 from your cellular phone and select the prompts
"Internet Solutions", and then "Mobile
Office" for other possible solutions.
- A laptop computer with a
PC-card slot or a serial port or Personal Digital Assistant
(PDA) Laptop computers: Windows 95/98/2000/NT or Macintosh.
PDAs: Windows CE or Palm (OS version 3.0 or higher.) The
Mobile Office kit is complete with everything you'll need to
get started. Additional equipment is required for Macintosh
laptops and laptops without a standard RS-232 serial port;
if you don't own the Mobile Office kit check with your phone
or device manufacturer for alternatives.
- Internet browser software
and/or other communication software
With the equipment listed
above, you will be able to use wireless data services within the
digital data service areas currently supported for Mobile Office
service. Your Verizon Wireless representative can provide you
with current service availability information for this solution.
What
are the computer requirements for running the Mobile Office
service?
All you need is a laptop computer running Windows 95, 98, 2000
or NT. Macintosh laptops are also supported, with some
additional equipment requirements. Please refer to our user
guides.
You can also use Windows CE
devices or Palm connected organizers (OS version 3.0 or higher),
with addition of a null modem adapter or special cabling. Please
refer to our user
guides.
Do I need special software to set
up my computer and phone to use the Mobile Office service?
No. However, the Mobile Office kit does include software that
will automatically configure your computer, which generally
enhances connection speeds. This software is also available for
purchase by itself. If you already own a serial data cable and
you elect to not purchase the configuration software you can
still use the set-up instructions in our user
guides to use your phone as a modem.
Do
I need special software to send and receive faxes?
Yes, you need to use Winfax Pro version 9.x or higher. This is
the only fax program currently supported.
Do
I need special software to check e-mail?
If you are using web-based e-mail, you can simply use your
Internet browser to check for mail.
If you have an existing POP3
e-mail account with an ISP, you can use Mobile Office to connect
with your ISP, then use the same e-mail program you currently
use to check for mail.
Do
I need special software to access the Internet?
You will need standard Internet browser software, such as
Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator, to take full advantage
of your Mobile Office service.
For most browsers, if you
access the Internet through your corporate network or from work,
you will need to change your proxy from manual to direct
Internet access. See Using Your Mobile Office Service in our user
guides section for additional information.
What kind of phones can I
use with my Mobile Office service?
Mobile Office kits are available for the following tri-mode
digital phones: Kyocera 2035a and the Motorola StarTac Series
are also supported. To view a list of compatible equipment, see
our Mobile
Office/Equipment page.
Where
do I purchase a digital data phone?
You have several options for purchasing a digital data phone:
- Visit your nearest Future
Communications
Sales Center.
- Or visit any authorized
retail outlet providing Verizon Wireless service.
My
office network is protected by a firewall. Are firewalls a
problem for the digital data phone?
No. If your company already supports remote access over a
conventional modem connected to a regular phone line, your
digital data phone and connector cable should also work.
If you are already set up for
remote access using a conventional modem, it usually takes only
a few minutes to set up your digital phone.
If you are not set up for
remote access, check with your network administrator to see if
you require any special client software to access your network.
Is
there a difference between a digital data phone and other types
of cellular phones?
Yes. The digital data phones that are supported behave like an
external modem for two purposes:
- To connect you directly to
the Internet through the Verizon Wireless network.
- To connect you with an
actual modem in the Verizon Wireless network (used for
access to your corporate network or Internet service
provider).
These digital data phones are designed to connect to a laptop
computer or personal digital assistant (PDA), using a serial
data cable, to accommodate data transmission without an
additional modem. Conventional cellular phones do not have data
capabilities without the use of an additional modem.
Can
I use my digital data phone to make voice phone calls, just as
with any other cell phone?
Yes. Your digital data phone is built for both voice
transmission and digital data transmission.
Can I change the name of the
dial-up connection given in the instructions?
Yes. You may customize the name of your connection.
You may also create as many
connections as you need for each network or service provider you
wish to access. Instructions are included in our user
guides.
